(Two year programme)
The course is presented by Tony Doherty, a fully qualified secondary school teacher and highly experienced state examiner.
We are proud of our past students who have achieved exceptional results on a consistent basis over our many years of delivering this programme. For many, the Leaving Certificate Music programme is seen as an extra subject and we endeavour to ensure that each student is prepared properly for both the written and practical elements.

5th year Wednesday:- 7:30pm – 9:00pm
The leaving certificate programme is offered to students who may or may not
be already be studying this subject in school

Tony Doherty
Leaving Certificate Tutor & Grade 5 Theory
Tony Doherty has an involvement in musical education in Artane spanning 6 decades. Commencing as a member of the Artane Boys Band he studied under Joe Lynch and Michael Roche, he played clarinet and made his debut as a concert announcer. Upon leaving school he commenced a degree in Music, Theology and Education in the Mater Dei Institute, and continued his musical studies in Form and Analysis under Dr Anne Murphy, Composition under Donal Hurley, and performance under Jack Conaty. Upon Graduation he took up positions in Beneavin College Finglas and the Artane School of Music. His work in Finglas ranged from classroom teacher, to Home School liaison and in 2017 he was appointed to the role of Deputy Principal, a position he holds currently. He has undertaken further studies in educational leadership and his philosophy of education is rooted in life long learning, and the importance of creating an environment to allow all to access education as fully as possible. He works in 3rd level education as a mentor and tutor for trainee teachers, and is vastly experienced as an examiner for the state exams. His work in music circles has seen him take conducting, managing, producing, administration, and narrating roles in Ireland, Europe and North America. He has led the leaving certificate programme in Artane for almost 30 years. The course has been devised to allow both students who have a formal musical background, and those who don’t to access the course ensuring that all have the opportunity to reach their potential.
